BACKGROUND –

Pankaj Mithal is presently serving as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court. He is Former Judge of the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Pankaj Mithal was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on 17 June 1961. He hails from a family of lawyers. He received his early education at St. Mary’s Academy, Meerut. He joined B.Com (Honors) at the University of Allahabad and graduated in 1982. Later, for his legal studies he joined Meerut College and obtained his law degree from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.

In the start of his career, he worked under the guidance of Sri Sudhir Chandra Verma, (later Judge of the Allahabad High Court and then Lokayukt, Uttar Pradesh). He dealt with large number of cases of land acquisition, labour, rent control, educational, and other miscellaneous matters.

He has served as the Standing Counsel for the Uttar Pradesh Awas Evam Vikas Parishad and at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra. He was elevated to the Bench as an Additional Judge on 7 July 2006 and was later elevated to a permanent Judge of the High Court at Allahabad in 200, where he was associated to several important committees and was also the Chairman of several of them such as the Library Committee, Higher Judicial Services Committee and the Committee to supervision of the construction of the High Court Museum.

He also remained posted as senior Judge of Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court for some time. He worked as Chairman State Advisory Board under the National Security Act while being posted at Lucknow. He was also the Chairman of La Martiniere College, Lucknow.

He is now Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court for the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh from 4 January 2021.
