REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT – He was the first person to become Chief Minister of Pondicherry from Vanniyar community which is regarded as a backward community in that territory. He set a record of contesting and winning the 2011 assembly elections just after three months of forming a party.

BACKGROUND – N Rangaswamy is the chief minister of puducherry and founder of All India NR congress party. He hails from Vanniyar community in Pondicherry born to a simple tamil family with agriculture as their primary occupation. He is not married and regarded as a simple politician by the people of his constituency.

Since his student days he was heavily inspired from K Kamraj who was an Indian Activist and politician. He is called as Makka Mudlavar in the Union Territory which means People’s Chief Minister.

He served as the assistant to Minister V pethaperumal in the initial days of his career. He joined Indian national Congress and contested his first election in 1990 from Thattachavady against V pethaperumal which he lost. However in 1991 he won the assembly elections and became Vidhan Sabha member and appointed as Minister of Agriculture and Co- operation.

In 2001 he was first time elected as the Chief Minister since then he has been elected 4 times as Chief Minister of puducherry.

MAJOR INITIATIVE – Rangaswamy has initiated various schemes for the development of Pondicherry and his efforts has yield results in the form of improved rankings of the Union Territory in women empowerment , education and infrastructure.

He initiated Perunthalaivar Karamajar housing scheme to provide financial assistance to BPL families with the objective to make puducherry a ‘Hut free zone’. He was also credited for laying the foundation of first government medical college in the territory and starting Rajiv Gandhi Breakfast scheme for students of government schools.

He implemented Kamraj Educational Assistance scheme for full reimbursement of tuition fees to students of medical and engineering colleges who got selected through CENTEC and also provided free notebooks, umbrella, raincoats and free LPG connection with stoves for poor families.

CAREER TIMELINE –

1990 – He contested his first election, from thattanchavady and lost.

1991 – Won assembly elections from thattanchavady as member of Indian National Congress and became Agriculture Minister.

1996 – He was appointed as Education Minister.

2001 – 2008– He elected and remained the Chief Minister of puducherry.

2008 – He resigned from Indian National congress.

7 February 2011 – He formed his own party named All India NR Congress (AINRC).

2011- 2016 – He contested election as a member of AINRC and elected as Chief Minister of Puducherry.

2016 – 2021 – He served as the leader of opposition in assembly.

7 May 2021 – He took oath as Chief Minister of Puducherry fourth time.

CONTROVERSY – After a long tussle between N Rangaswamy and his cabinet ministers he was asked to step down from the position of Chief Minister by the INC leaders and he was replaced by V Vaithilingam. Humiliated by such internal politics he formed his own party on 7 february 2011 which was named as All India NR Congress.

NR is an acronym of Namathi Rajiyam (our kingdom) and his party’s motto is ‘Simplicity, Fairness and Transparency’.

In April 2015 MLA M V Ramchandram left the party along with 20 others because of internal politics jeopardizing the future of party with remaining 14 MLAs. Afterwards Malladi Krishna Rao joined the party reestablishing the stability in AINRC.
