Chhota Shakeel was an Indian fugitive and the main aide of most the wanted criminal in India- Dawood Ibrahim since 1988. In the beginning, he ran a shady travel agency in Dongri, Mumbai and apparently invested a lot in films and real estate after joining Dawood.

He had a big hand in the 1993 Bombay blasts and was wanted by U.S. Government for international drug trafficking. After the 1993 incident, he fled India and remained a fugitive till his rumoured death in 2017. In 2004, he was declared a proclaimed offender alongwith several others for ISI Conspiracy case by a POTA Court.

Legal Backgroung:

  1. 1993 BOMBAY BLASTS

Chhota Shakeel was one of the co-conspirators that were a part of Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company and played a major role in the 1993 Bombay blasts. The whole plan was hatched by Ibrahim and his main men Chhota Shakeel, Tiger Memon, Yakub Memon, Abu Salem were a part of it. A charge sheet was filed against all of them out of which only Yakub Menon was convicted and hanged to death. Ibrahim and Tiger Memon are still absconding while Chhota Shakeel is alleged to have died recently.

  1. CHHOTA RAJAN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

After the 1993 blasts, Chhota Rajan split from Dawood Ibrahim and started his own terror gang against the anti- India people, including Dawood. In September 2000, Dawood tracked down Chhota Rajan in Bangkok and Chhota Shakeel led the attempted assassination. Posing as pizza delivery person, Rajan’s main man and his wife were shot; however, he escaped through the roof and fire-escape, although with a broken back.

  1. INTERNATIONAL DRUG TRAFFICKING

According to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), Chhota Shakeel and his gang were involved in drug trafficking since the 1980s. Narcotics like Heroin and Hashish were smuggled from Afghanistan and Thailand into the United States, Western Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa. Reportedly, he worked with Afghan and Columbian suppliers.

  1. IPL SPOT FIXING SCANDAL

In 2013 IPL spot fixing scandal, it was rumoured that cricketer Sreesanth and two others were acting under the orders of Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel. The Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) was invoked by the Mumbai Police. On hearing, the Additional Sessions Judge declared both of them alongwith one Sandeep Sharma as proclaimed offenders. It was alleged that the cricketers were in contact with the gangsters through tele-communication. The Court even ordered attachment of the properties of Dawood and Shakeel in the matter.

  • CURRENT STATUS

Chhota Shakeel was rumoured dead after an audio clip was received stating that Shakeel died in Pakistan on 7 January, 2017. Another source stated that he died of a heart attack in Tajikistan. Even the Royal Thai Police sent a letter to the Interpol stating that Shakeel is dead and no longer subject to Interpol’s Red Corner Notice. However, in 2018, India Today conducted an investigation which proved that an Indian Origin man ordered a Bangkok National to send the alleged letter. But no final news has been received on Shakeel’s death ever since.
