BACKGROUND –

B.A. Khan is an Advocate, arbitrator, commentator and analyst on legal affairs. He was the former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Throughout his decades-long career in law and public life, he has held a number of key positions.

He has served in various High Courts including being the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. He has also worked as the president of SAARC Law India and as a member of the Executive Committee of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. Furthermore, he has been the Chairman of the J&K State Accountability Commission.

Khan hails from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir. He was born in April, 1945. His educational qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Arts along with a Bachelor’s in Law. He enrolled himself as an advocate by the Bar Council at Delhi in September, 1971 and shifted to Srinagar Bar in 1972. He has practised on both civil and criminal sides.

During the time period of 1972-78, he worked as a Lecturer in Kashmir University Law Faculty. He was appointed as an Additional Advocate General in 1986 from which he resigned in 1990. Later on, he took the position of a permanent Judge at the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

He was transferred to Madhya Pradesh High Court on 8th October, 1997 where he headed its Indore Bench as Administrative Judge for over two years. He was then shifted to Delhi High Court in 2000. In 2005, he was again transferred to Jammu and Kashmir High Court where he served as the Chief Justice until his retirement in 2007.

Justice Khan was also selected as the Chairman of the J&K State Accountability Commission (SAC)- an anti-graft body akin to the Lokpal in the year 2015.
