Supreme Court directs Airlines to refund tickets booked before Covid-19

Supreme Court bench of justices Ashok Bhushan, RS Reddy and MR Shah directs Airlines to refund tickets booked prior to the Covid-19 lockdown for travel upto May 24.

Supreme Court approved the formulation drafted by Directorate General of Civil Aviation suggested by DGCA itself to deal with refunds for cancelled tickets due to restrictions imposed due to the lockdown that started from March 25 this year.

Court also gave option to airlines to create a credit shell in the name of the passenger which can be availed for travel on any route before March 31, 2021.

Credit shell will be transferable and interest will accrue on the money. 0.5 per cent from date of cancellation till June 30 and thereafter 0.75 per cent till March 31, 2021.

On April 16 DGCA issued notification ordering immediate refund for tickets booked during lockdown (March 25-April 14).
