Subramanian Swamy, a former Rajya Sabha member of the BJP, was ordered by the Delhi High Court on Wednesday to give the estate officer control of his government mansion within six weeks. The cabinet committee allocated Swamy, a former Union Minister, government housing in the Lutyens zone on January 15, 2016, for a five-year period, citing security concerns.

He was pounding on the high court’s doors asking for a new housing assignment due to “continued security threats.” His tenure in the Rajya Sabha expired in April 2022.

The Centre resisted his request, claiming that other ministries and MPs also needed to be accommodated.

Justice Yashwant Varma, after hearing Swamy’s argument, noted that the first allocation was given for a five-year term and that there was no evidence to support the applicant’s allegations that he needed the allocation of the government residence.

The Court while parting from case further directs the petitioner to ensure that the possession in question is handed over to the estate officer concerned within a period of six weeks from today.
