The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a total ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region from November 9 to 30.

Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, the Chairperson of NGT, has said that the ban will be applied to all towns and cities where the air quality is under the “poor” category.

“At other places, ban/restrictions are optional for the authorities but if there are more stringent measures under orders of the authorities, the same will prevail,” the bench headed by Justice Goel said.

Earlier this month, NGT had asked for the central government’s response to banning firecrackers in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Also, Calcutta High Court had ordered a ban on the use of firecrackers during Kali Puja.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was established under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010 to deal with matters concerning environmental protection and conservation of forests and natural resources.

India is the first developing country and third in the world after Australia and New Zealand, to set up the Tribunal.
