An Indonesian Court ruled that President Joko Widodo and six other Officials have violated residents’ Right to Clean Air and ordered them to improve the terrible air quality in the Capital.

On Thursday, the Central Jakarta District Court ruled in favour of the plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit against Widodo, the Ministers of Home Affairs, Health, and the Environment, as well as the Governors of Jakarta, Banten, and West Java, to hold the Government accountable for failing to ensure a healthy living environment in the city.

Presiding Judge Saifuddin Zuhri directed the authorities to take appropriate steps to preserve the health of Jakarta residents by enforcing Air quality Regulations.

The plaintiffs, a group of activists, public personalities, motorcycle taxi drivers, and people suffering from pollution-related diseases, were not seeking monetary compensation, but rather stricter monitoring and penalties for polluters.

Jakarta has a population of ten million people, with three times that number living in the greater metropolitan area. Jakarta is consistently ranked as one of the World’s most polluted cities.
