Gurugram Court summoned Alibaba, Jack Ma upon a complaint filed by a former employee.

A former employee of the company in India has filed a complaint stating that he was wrongfully fired by the company after he raised objection against fake news and censorship on the company’s application A district court in Gurugram has summoned Alibaba and Jack Ma regarding the case.

Civil Judge Sonia Sheokand has issued summons to many individuals from the company, Alibaba and Jack Ma. They are asked to appear in the court either directly or through their lawyers on July 29. The court also sought written response from the company within 30 days.

A former employee named Pushpandra Singh Parmar alleged that the company showed false news and also censored content that was not favourable to China. Both UC Browser and UC News, have been alleged to spread fake news to increase social and political anxiety among its users.

A few weeks before, the Indian Government has banned the use of 59 applications, which includes Alibaba’s UC News, UC Browser. The Government sought answers from the banned companies regarding their censor content and also enquired about their legal compliances.

The employee has filed a complaint of over 200 pages that includes pieces of evidence of such posts that the employee alleges, to be falsely propagated through the company’s app. The former employee also mentioned that a headline in 2018 post said “Just now: War Broke out between Indi and Pakistan”, the article also mentioned about cross border firings between the countries. Such news was false as no such war broke out between the two countries. Similarly, in a post in 2017, an article was headlined, that Rs. 2000 notes were to be banned from midnight today in India, whereas no such ban came in force.

The complaint has an entire list of sensitive words, named “sensitive word list”. Such words were used by the UC Web to censor content on its Indian platforms. The UC India, giving their statement said, that they have complied with all laws of the land but did not comment on the complaint filed against them.
