CJI: Preference Should be Given to Women for Appointment as Panel Advocated

N.V Ramana, the Chief Justice of India said that to Increase the Visibility of Women before the Bench, they should be given preference as Panel Advocates.

The Statement was made by the Chief Justice while speaking at a Virtual Event organized for the celebration of International Women’s Day.

The Chief Justice also said that due to Societal Pressure, many Female Lawyers give up the Legal Profession, and therefore there is a need to develop an Environment that Enables Women to Pursue Law as a Career. He also mentioned that only 15% of the 17 Lakh lawyers in the Country are women.

To increase talent pools, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) said that there should be Reservations for Women in the Legal Profession.

The Chief Justice mentioned in his address that he had been trying to correct the Gender Imbalance in the Supreme Court since he assume office.

Out of the 9 vacancies in the Supreme Court, 3 are filled by women, the Chief Justice stated.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) in his address also recounted his life had been shaped by exemplary women like his Mother, Wife, and Daughters.

He stated that he had been deeply influenced by these women.

The Chief Justice said that women bring a different perspective to the law which is necessary and that their presence in the legal field is more than a symbolic gesture.
