REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT– In 1990, when Laldenga died, he became the President of the Mizo National Front. When the assembly elections were held at the end of 1998, he led his party to victory and became the fifth Chief Minister of Mizoram, he was re-elected in 2003.

Pu Zoramthanga is the 5th and current Chief Minister of Mizoram. He is politically affiliated to Mizo National Front (MNF).

BACKGROUND – In 1996, Zoramthanga joined the underground movement as the part of the Mizo Freedom Movement of the Mizo Naional Front and moved to the jungle. He served as secretary for Run Bung Area for three years.

Later, he became the secretary of MNF Leader Laldenga and moved to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He was arrested by the Indian army and was held at the Assam Rifles Quarter Guard during the insurgency.

UPBRINGING & EDUCATION – Zoramthanga did his primary education from 1950 to 1954, then he went to middle school at the South Khawbung and passed sixth grade from there. After that, he studied at Champai Gandhi Memorial School till the tenth grade. He finished college from D.M College, Manipur.

After his graduation, he joined Mizo National Front and actively participated in the movement as well as the political activities.

WALK OF LIFE– In 1979, he was given the responsibility of being the Vice President. He was made a minister in the interim government of the state. When the Mizo National Front formed the government inn 1987 under the leadership of Laldenga, he looked after the financial and educational departments. In 1990, when laldenga died, he became the President of the MNF.

When the assembly elections were held at the end of 1998, he led his party to victory and became the fifth Chief Minister of Mizoram. He was then re-elected in 2003 but lost both seats in Champai in 2008 assembly elections however, he was re-elected as the member of the legislative assembly in 2018 elections at the Aizwal East-1 constituency and became the Chief Minister of Mizoram from 15 December, 2018.

2018 – MNF came back to power with 26 seats. Zoramthanga was elected as the chief minister of Mizoram as a successor of Lal Thanhawala.

CONTROVERSIES/CASES – He has two cases pending against him. One was registered in 2012 and the other one in 2013. The charges against him include those of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, fraudulent cancelation, abetment, and destruction of evidence of offence.
