Visually Impaired Lawyer Suraj Singh, Appointed Government Counsel in J&K High Court

Suraj Singh, a Visually Impaired Advocate from Jammu and Kashmir, who had been protesting against the Alleged failure of the Government to implement Disability Laws in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed Government Advocate in High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Singh has been practicing before the Jammu Wing of the High Court since 2011, was sitting on a Dharna for the past few weeks seeking Enforcement of the Rights under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016.

“The appointment shall be for a period of one year which shall be extended subject to satisfactory performance of the Advocate and Production of Documents related to eligibility prescribed in notification SRO 98 of 2016”, the Order said.

A press release was also issued by the Additional Secretary to Government Ashish Gupta with regard to the appointment of Singh as Government Advocate.

“Government has taken a significant step which will go a long way in providing Benefits to the Specially-Abled persons by upholding their dignity and removing discrimination by appointing Suraj Singh, a Visually Impaired Advocate as Government Advocate for defending Government cases before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir at Jammu.”

“There has been, since long, a persistent demand of specially-abled persons to give them due representation in Government Assignments,” the press release said.
