Tarun Tejpal’s Acquittal in Sexual Assault Case a Retrograde’ Verdict: Goa Govt

The Goa Government informed the Bombay High Court that Sessions Court Verdict on Tejpal’s sexual Assault Case was “Retrograde” and “Fit for the fifth century”.

A Sessions Court Acquitted him in a Case where Tejapal Former Editor-in-Chief was charged with Rape of a colleague in an elevator in 2013. The Goa Government moved to the Bombay High Court challenging the Sessions Court Verdict.

In an Appeal by the Goa Government, it challenged the Court judgement and stated, “The judgement was coloured by prejudice and patriarchy.”

Tejpal’s Lawyer Amit Desai pleaded the Court to consider two applications. The first was regarding the maintainability of the Goa Government’s Appeal against the Acquittal. The second Plea sought an in-camera hearing of the matter. However, the Bombay High Court held the in-camera proceedings of the Case.

The Tehelka Magazine Former Editor-in-Chief assaulted a then Journalist at the magazine twice in the elevator, first on November 7 and second time following day. However, the woman did not complain immediately, but after 9-10 days she sent a detailed incident to Managing Director, Shoma Chaudhary.

The Police took Suo Moto Cognizance and registered a FIR. The Trail took place almost after 8 years.

The Bench of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and M S Jawalkar will Hear the Matter on November 16.
