The Family Court in Kozhikode has been designated as the first “child-friendly” Family Court in the State as a result of recommendations given by the Kerala High Court earlier this year.

The Calicut Judiciary and the Calicut Bar Association Committee, 2022, collaborated to create “Swapnakoodu,” the State’s first project of its sort.

The District and Sessions Judge, S. Krishna Kumar, officially launched this innovative project today at 1.30 PM at the Calicut Bar Association Hall.

In their judgement dated June 24, 2022, the Division Bench of the Kerala High Court, composed of Justices A. Muhamed Mustaque and C.S. Dias, expressed regret about the situation in a few Family Courts in the State.

“The children and the parties are seen standing in jam-packed corridors and even on the roads for the whole day. The congested Courts and the over-crowded premises, in fact, stares at the young minds, who develop negative notions regarding the justice delivery system in the Country”.

The Court had considered creating a similar setup for the Family Courts as well after observing that there are designated areas in the POCSO Courts in the State that are conducive to the best interests of the child.

The Court had requested a report from the Registrar of the District Judiciary about the possibility of the same.

With big paintings by artists Sunil Ashokapuram and Nisha Raveendran gracing its walls, along with toys for the kids to play with and sofas to relax on, Swapnakoodu was developed in this light and has been envisioned as a “play space for kids.”
