Supreme Court registers Suo Motu case on safety of Judges post Uttam Anand Death

The death of a Judge in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad after he was allegedly knocked down on road, echoed in the Supreme Court on Thursday.

The case was presented before a Bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justice Surya Kant which on Friday directed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Jharkhand to present a status report on the investigation into the death of judge Anand within a week.

Post his death, the Jharkhand High Court took Suo Motu cognizance of the incident and is auditing the issue.

The Supreme Court in its order clearly stated that its order will not affect the case before Jharkhand High Court and the High Court shall continue with the proceedings in the Suo Motu case initiated by it.

While it was earlier believed that judge Anand died in an accident, CCTV footage of the incident revealed that the vehicle intentionally rammed into him as he was walking o the edge of the road. 

Some high profile cases were being heard by Judge Anand which included the murder mystery of Ranjay Singh, a close ally of Jharia MLA Sanjeev Singh.

In addition, he recently denied the bail petitions of 2 members of a gang of Amar Singh, a gangster of Uttar Pradesh.
