A Special NIA court on Friday granted Sunil Mane custody till April 28 to the NIA agency. He was arrested in connection with Thane trader Mansukh Hiran’s murder.

The NIA agency on Thursday summoned Mane during the probe and placed him under arrest on Friday.

Special NIA Judge Rahul R Bhosle granted the custody after Advocate Prakash Shetty, appearing for NIA expressed the federal agency’s contention for Mane’s custody to recover his phone and other personal devices and also to obtain his call data records.

The agency claimed Mane was a part of the conspiracy to kill Hiran and had confessed his sin.

Sunil Mane, who was posted in the Local Arms Unit, is the fifth person and third serving policeman to be arrested in the case.

The court also extended the judicial custody of two other accused till May 5. Suspended police officer Sachin Vaze and his colleague at the crime branch’s Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) Riyazuddin Kazi are the main accused in the case.

“At least two statements recorded so far have also confirmed that Mane was present in the CIU office when Hiran was being convinced by Vaze to get arrested in the terror scare case. Mane was also trying to convince Hiran to do the same,” an NIA officer said.

An NIA officer further said,“It was on the pretext of helping him go underground that the accused called him to meet them at Ghodbunder road on March 4 night. We believe the person who called Hiran and claimed to be officer ‘Tawde’ was Mane.”
