Sibsagar MLA and Raijor Dal President, Akhil Gogoi has finally been discharged by a Special Court of the National Investigation Agency in the second case, out of two cases filed against him, relating to the Anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act violence in Assam.

Gogoi was in jail since December 2019, after two cases were filed against him for allegedly provoking violence during the Anti-CAA protests, under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act.

Gogoi was held in the cases relating to criminal conspiracy, sedition, promoting enmity on the grounds of religion, race, language and standing against the national integrity, thereby supporting a terrorist organization.

While Gogoi was discharged on 25 June from the first case filed against him at Chabua Police Station, the Special Court discharged him from the second case also on 1 July, which was earlier filed at Guwahati Police station in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Even though Gogoi was earlier granted bail in Chabua Case in October 2020, it was challenged in the Gauhati High Court and he had to stay in jail in regards to the other case filed against him.

The National Investigation Agency Court, considering Gogoi’s 84-year-old mother to be in poor health, granted him 2 days parole to meet his family members.

After this Order, Gogoi is set to be free soon.
