Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who faces rape and illegal confinement charges, has recently approached the Supreme Court for the grant of bail in relation to his rape case conviction sentence. It was considered by the bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravikumar.
The Matter:
Asaram Bapu was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Rajasthan for raping a minor at his ashram.
Also, two Surat-based sisters had also lodged separate complaints against him and his son, Narayan Sai, for repeated sexual assaults between 2001 and 2006.
Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat and Advocate Rajesh Inamdar had argued that the bail be granted on age-related grounds and due to his deteriorating health conditions. The counsel also contended that he had been in jail for nine years.
Since he is facing trial in Gujarat, he is unable to get his sentence suspended in Rajasthan in another case.
Court’s Order:
While rejecting his bail plea on December 10, 2021, Justice AJ Desai of the Gujarat High Court had also directed the Gandhinagar Sessions Court to wind up the trial in four months.
Subsequently, the bench has issued notice to the State of Gujarat in this matter and will be hearing the case next on September 7.
