The Enforcement Directorate’s proposal to shift alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar and his wife from Tihar jail, where he is now being held, to Mandoli jail was accepted by the Supreme Court on Tuesday [Sukash Chandra Shekhar @ Sukesh & Anr vs. Union of India & Anr].

Chandrashekhar’s request to be transferred to a jail outside of Delhi was denied by a Bench of Justices comprising of S Ravindra Bhat and Sudhanshu Dhulia.

A jail outside of Delhi was sought after by Chandra Shekhar due to threats against his life and safety.

In the absence of concrete threats, the Court noted on Tuesday that prisoners ordinarily do not have this choice.

Within a week, the jail transfer must be completed.

Chandrasekhar said that some prison authorities at Tihar were threatening his life and safety when he went to the highest court to seek transfer to any other jail, preferably one outside of Delhi.

After being imprisoned for money laundering, extortion, and other offences, Chandrasekhar was supposedly living a lavish lifestyle within the Tihar jail.

The imprisoned conman was requested by the Supreme Court last month to provide the names of Tihar jail officials to whom he paid payments of more than ₹12.5 crores to secure a lavish lifestyle inside the jail.

Before deciding whether or not he has to be moved out of Tihar jail, where he is now being held, the Bench stated that it will not avoid going into detail about the allegations.

His transfer had been ordered by a Supreme Court vacation Bench in June, but when the issue arose again, it was decided to post it before the regular court, observing that there was no urgency in the matter.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said in an affidavit before the Supreme Court that Chandrasekhar ran a crime syndicate while he was imprisoned, paying 1.5 crores per month for facilities like phone use and having some jail officials on his payroll.
