The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday stayed the arrest and investigation of Former Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini in connection with multiple cases filed against him till the commencement of State Assembly Elections, 2022.
A Bench of Justice Arvind Singh Sangwan observed, “Stay on the arrest of the petitioner in all cases pending or likely to be registered or registered or where he is sought to be implicated in the aid of Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code, except FIR No.77, where the matter is pending before the Supreme Court, till the General Election in the State of Punjab are held.”
In the instant case, Saini claimed that the prosecution of the petitioner was a Political ploy in light of the upcoming Punjab State Legislative Elections in February 2022.
The Bench stated, “The Court found merit in the submissions made by counsel for the petitioner that the petitioner’s involvement in multiple cases could be a Political ploy in the wake of the coming State Legislative Assembly General Elections.”
Accordingly, the Court ordered that no further investigation be conducted or pursued until February 20, 2022, including that of Commission formed by the State of Punjab.
