The Supreme Court turned down a request from a lawyer on Friday to have former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma arrested for allegedly making a hateful remark about the revered Prophet Mohammad during a television discussion.

Justices Ravindra Bhat, P.S. Narasimha, and Chief Justice U.U. Lalit made up the Bench that heard the case.

CJI Lalit stated–

“…This may sound simple and innocuous but it has far reaching consequences. The court should circumspect while issuing directions. We would suggest you to withdraw.”

The petitioner’s attorney emphasised the alternate prayer, which asks for execution of the Tehseen Poonawalla judgment’s instructions about the regulation of mob lynching, after the court indicated its disinclination to consider the plea under Article 32 demanding arrest.

As a result, the issue was dropped and dismissed.

Through Advocate Chand Qureshi, Advocate Abu Sohel filed a petition asking for guidelines for an “independent, credible, and unbiased inquiry” into the occurrence.

The Supreme Court previously referred to Delhi Police all FIRs filed against Nupur Sharma in various areas of the nation following her comments about the Prophet Mohammed during the channel debate broadcast by “Times Now” on May 26.
