On Friday, 12 August 2022, Supreme Court gave an additional time of one week for demolition of Supertech’s twin 40-storey towers in its Emerald project in Noida. This comes after the Noida Authority on Thursday filed in the Supreme Court the status report on preparations for the demolition. The blast date has now been shifted from August 21 to 28.

On Thursday, the Noida Authority had proposed to shift the date of demolition from August 21 to 28.

A senior Noida Authority official said, “The nearly 100-metre tall illegal towers, which were so far scheduled for demolition on August 21 at 2.30, have now been proposed to be demolished on August 28.”

This proposal was made keeping in view, the reports of all stakeholders, which also included the Noida Authority, Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), developer of the twin towers Supertech, demolition firm Edifice Engineering and its South African partner Jet Demolition.

On Thursday, The Supreme Court-appointed technical expert gave its affirmation for demolishing of Supertech’s twin towers with explosives. A day after, the apex court extended the date of the demolition from August 21 to 28.

A 7-day buffer period from August 29 to September 4 was also given for the demolition to take process “in case of any technical glitches or weather-related problems”.

The approval of the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) was the last affirmation needed for the setting up of explosives inside the structures of the Supertech’s twin towers located in Sector 93B in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

“The CBRI was satisfied with the responses related to safety measures after Edifice and Supertech agreed to have the structural audit of nearby buildings done before demolition of the twin towers,” a Noida Authority official said.

Supertech and Edifice have assured the CBRI of putting in place all necessary  safety measures and risk mitigation methods in and around the Emerald Court and ATS Village societies, which are adjoining the Supertech’s Emerald twin towers.

According to officials, “More than 3,500 kg of explosives will be rigged  inside the structures and around 9,400 holes will be drilled in the columns and shears of the skeletal structures of the Supertech’s twin towers.”

On August 31 last year, the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of the 40-storey Emerald twin towers built by Supertech over the violation of construction by-laws. The towers were to house over 900 flats and 21 shops. A PIL was also filed by an organisation called the Centre for Law and Good Governance against the order to demolish the Supertech twin towers. The top court rejected this PIL and imposed a fine of Rs. 5 lakh fine on the petitioner.

Supertech’s Apex and Ceyane towers in Noida Sector 93A and 93B are scheduled for demolition on August 28, 2022.
