The Kerala High Court on February 08, 2022 initiated a Suo Motu Case based on a report that devotees are made to wash the feet of 12 Brahmins at Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, Tripunithura as an atonement of their sins.
A news item was published in Kerala Kaumudi Daily on February 04 in which it was stated that as part of ‘Panthrandu Namaskaram’ at Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, Tripunithura under the management of Cochin Devaswom Board, the devotees are made to wash the feet of 12 brahmins as atonement for sins.
The Counsel for the Cochin Devaswom Board submitted that it is not the devotees washing the feet of the 12 Brahmins, it is the ‘Thantri’ who wash the feet of 12 poojaries of Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, in connection with ‘Panthrandu Namaskaram’.
The Order of the High Court read
Today when this matter is taken up for consideration, the learned Standing Counsel for Cochin Devaswom Board, on instructions, would submit that in connection with ‘Panthrandu Namaskaram’ in Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, the devotees are not made to wash the feet of brahmins, as stated in the news report. It is the ‘Thantri’, who wash the feet of 12 poojaries of Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, in connection with Panthrandu Namaskaram.
The Counsel for Cochin Devaswam Board sought two-weeks time to file an affidavit in this regard which the Court allowed. The matter will be heard again on February 25.
