A Mumbai City Civil Court granted an “ex-parte injunction” againstthe Indian edtech startup Unacademy and its Medical Test prep subsidiary, PrepLadder.
The Court issued an Order prohibiting Unacademy from using the PrepLadder application and website—as well as their entire content—until all proprietary information, know-how, and technology belonging to Medical Joyworks has been removed to the satisfaction of Medical Joyworks and an Independent Auditor.
The Court further ordered, “The plaintiff (Medical Joyworks) can claim compensation after analysing the loss, if any.”
A Petition filed by Medical Joyworks alleged that PrepLadder has plagiarised Medical Joyworks’s Prognosis Application and other property.
In July 2020, Unacademy acquired PrepLadder, a Postgraduate Medical Entrance Exam preparation Startup, for $50 million with the intention of strengthening Unacademy’s existence in the Medical Entrance Examination categories.
The Sri Lankan startup Medical Joyworks stated that it had submitted Substantial Evidence before the Court demonstrating how PrepLadder systematically replicated, altered, and presented their own Medical Joyworks proprietary information, know-how, and technology.
