Ashish Lata Ramgobin, great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi has been sentenced to 7 years of jail imprisonment in a fraud and forgery case.

Rambogin is accused of defrauding businessman SR Maharaj, director of New Africa Alliance Footwear Distributors.

Maharaj’s company imports, manufactures and sells clothing, linen and footwear thereby providing loans to other companies on a profit-share basis.

Ramgobin is alleged to have met Maharaj and provided him with a fake purchase order, an invoice and a delivery note.

Rambogin, with all the forged documents, defrauded Maharaj by convincing him that she had imported 3 containers of linen from the South African Hospital Group NetCare and needed a loan of Rs. 3.3 crore to make payments of the same.

Furthermore, Rambogin showed Maharaj the confirmation from NetCare’s bank account that payment was duly made.

Considering the family credentials of Rambogin, Maharaj gave a loan to her and entered into a written agreement with her.

After Maharaj got to know that the documents were forged, he filed a criminal case against Ramgobin.

Ramgobin is a founder and an executive director of the Participative Development Initiative at the NGO International Centre for Non-Violence.

Ramgobin has now been sentenced to 7 years of life imprisonment by a Durban Court.
