The Madras High Court on Thursday suggested the State government to appoint a devoted team lead by an IAS officer for the proper maintenance of Mariana Beach in Chennai.

“The beach is not properly maintained and is often littered, and nobody cares about it,” a division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice T V Thamilselvi mentioned.

The Court subsequently directed the state and the Greater Chennai Corporation to present a detailed report about the amount of garbage generated on the beach daily, the steps taken to dispose of the same, the no. of toilets and mobile toilets present at the beach for visitors and the details about the measures taken and going to be taken in recent future for the maintenance of the beach.

The Court in addition demanded an explanation from the authorities regarding the revenue generated from the beach and the budget spent on maintenance of the same.

The Court passed an Interim order directing the corporation to allot vending carts to ice cream vendors on the concerned beach.

The Court questioned as to why an exclusive fish market cannot come up near the loop in order to prevent public and fish vendors from encroaching upon the loop road.

The authorities have been granted time till 22 July to file the report.
