The Supreme Court Ordered the Uttar Pradesh Government on the killing of farmers at a protest in Lakhimpur Kheri earlier this month to protect and record the statement of all witnesses and that this should not be an unending story.

Further, three days after the Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with the Uttar Pradesh Government’s progress in the case, Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra held for running over four farmers during a protest on October 3 was arrested on October 11

The Supreme Court demanded the Yogi Adityanath Government to present a Status Report of how many have been held over the killing of eight persons and on what charges.

Mr Harish Salve representing the Uttar Pradesh Government stated that the report had been submitted in a sealed cover yesterday.

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana sternly replied that they waited till 1 AM last night in order to receive the material.

Further Chief Justice of India NV Ramana stated “How can we read it if it gets filed at the last minute? At least file it a day before.”

Further, the Chief Justice and the other Judges interrogated why more witnesses had not been questioned by the Uttar Pradesh Government.

Advocate Salve informed that the process is still going on and all principal accused have been arrested.

Further, the Supreme Court questioned how many had been arrested, to which Advocate Salve replied that the Arrests were made for two crimes – one for mowing down the farmers and the other for the lynching of those connected to the car and that in the first case 10 have been arrested.

Furthermore, Justice Hima Kohli stated “We feel you are dragging your feet. Please dispel that.”

Further Advocate Salve prayed for time on the issue.

The Bench after hearing arguments, issued a notice and posted the matter for further hearing on October 26.
