After Speaker MB Rajesh turned down the Opposition’s Notice for an Adjournment Motion to discuss the claims made by gold smuggling suspects against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in their statement to Customs, the Opposition boycotted Assembly proceedings in Kerala for the day on Thursday.
The Speaker stated that it was improper to hold a debate in the Assembly based on alleged statements made by defendants in a case.
In addition, the case is being considered by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court.
According to the Speaker, the Sessions Court, High Court, and Supreme Court are all considering similar cases.
MLA P T Thomas moved the adjournment motion, seeking that the topic be discussed. However, the speaker stated that debating the topic solely on the basis of the accused’s comments is incorrect.
Thomas further stated that the topic is being considered by several Courts and that it is not necessary to discuss it in the parliament.
Meanwhile, opposition leader V D Satheesan questioned whether the matter should be discussed elsewhere.
Self-finance, the Sabarimala verdict, the Kodakara Hawala Case, and other topics were discussed in the assembly. But why the Government takes a different stance only on this matter, Satheesan asked
Registering its protest over the notice being turned down, the Opposition raised slogans for a brief period and later announced its decision to boycott Assembly proceedings for the day.
