Karnataka HC to Hear SEC Plea Over Zilla & Taluk Panchayat Elections

The memo is being filed by the State Election Commission (SEC) for early hearing of matter filed by Election Commission in Karnataka High Court on the matter of Zilla panchayat and Taluk panchayat polls in front of Vacation Bench of Justice B M Shayam and Justice M G S Kamal.

The Supreme Court passed the verdict to hold elections of Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat immediately and that is why reason cited by Election Commission is emergency situation due to the order of Apex Court in memo filed.

Vacation Bench decided to hear matter on May 17 on holding Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections.

Senior Counsel K N Phanindra submitted that matter on Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat election was already pending in Court so for early hearing memo was filed.

In 2021 the State Election Commission had prepared the list of voter and reservation draft was also completed and delimiting of constituencies was also exercised.

But State Government withdraw the powers of SEC and new Panel for delimitation has been created by the Government and decided to redraw constituencies.

The Writ Petition was filed against the formation of this Panel by Election Commission challenging the power of State Government. This Petition was pending in High Court.
