Jail Inmates to be Released Amidst Second Wave of Covid-19: J&K High Court

Jammu & Kashmir High Court decided to release the jail inmates on a 90 days interim bail in line with the Supreme Court’s order.

The decision was taken by a high powered committee of High Court, justice Ali Mohammad Magrey.

Justice Magrey directed the J&K Legal Service Authority (JKLSA) to coordinate with the other two members of the committee and look into the category of convicts under trail and see who can be released in pursuant to the Apex Court’s directions.

Post completion of the process a report would be presented to the committee as told by a spokesman.

Further it is directed that the Director General of Police, Prison should coordinate with Health Department and ensure vaccination of the inmates and jail staff on priority basis.

The committee also directed the jail authorities to maintain hygiene and social distancing inside cell areas like kitchen, bathrooms etc. and to ensure the staff members wear masks. Justice Magrey directed Legal Service Institutions across the UT to provide Panel lawyers to eligible inmates concerning release from custody by moving applications on their behalf.

 Therefore, It suggested the creation of additional or temporary accommodation within or outside jail complexes to ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs).
