IT Ministry to social media firms: Submit compliance of new rules

After the Facebook owned WhatsApp sued Central Government over the new IT rules, the Ministry of Information & Technology has asked the social media platforms to submit the compliance report to its new rules.

The new rules, announced on 25 February, required social media firms to follow extra diligence and appointment of a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person, and a resident grievance officer.

The new rules further mandate WhatsApp to identify the first originator of messages deemed mischievous by government and platforms like Twitter and Facebook to remove unlawful content being flagged within 36 hours.

The Ministry further announced that non-compliance of the new rules will lead to criminal action against the firms, in case of complaints.

As of now, only Facebook has said that it aims to comply with the new rules but would like to discuss some issues that need more engagement in detail.

The deadline for complying with the new rules ended on 25 May.
