Armenia accused its neighbor, Azerbaijan, of persistently promoting Ethnic hatred against Armenian citizens at the International Court of Justice.

The claim was made by Armenian representative Yeghishe Kirakosyan during a hearing at the United Nations Court to impose urgent Interim Measures to prevent Azerbaijan from violating the International Convention against Ethnic Discrimination.

The lawsuit originates from long-standing animosity that culminated in last year’s conflict over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, which killed over 6,600 people.

Since the end of a Separatist war in 1994, the region has been under the control of Ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia.

Mr. Kirakosyan stated that Armenia seeks to prevent and remedy the cycle of violence and hatred perpetrated against ethnic Armenians, rather than seeking a ruling on the underlying causes of the war.

Furthermore, Azerbaijan also launched a similar complaint against Armenia, alleging discrimination against its nationals, and has asked the International Court of Justice to impose Interim Measures.

The Court scheduled the matter for next Monday.
