The International Criminal Court (ICC) authorised a formal Investigation on the controversial ‘anti-drug war’ of the Philippines.

The ICC stated that the Judges had permitted a request made by prosecutors, to start the Investigation into potential murders as against the Law towards Humanity.

The Pre-trial Chamber on Wednesday said that the Anti-Drug Campaign cannot be seen as a legitimate Law Enforcement Operation.

It said that it indicate a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte , waged a war on drugs in the Philippines in June 2016. The Police claimed that 6600 and more have lost their lives.

Karaptan, Philippine’s right group stated, “Duterte and his men should be made accountable for such crimes.”

Although, Philippines has withdrawn its membership from the ICC, it was a member between July 2016-March 2019.

The Court is of the view that said crimes appeared to have continued after that date, but that the court was limited to investigating those suspected to have occurred while the Philippines was a member.
