The I&B Ministry (Information and Broadcasting) is now preparing to file a petition seeking transfer of all the cases in India against OTT platforms in all courts to the Supreme Court.

This week, the government had informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court about its plan to approach the Supreme Court for the same.

Around 20 cases against OTT content are being heard in different courts all over India, and it will be more helpful if the top court hears them all.

On behalf of the government, senior officials and legal experts are travelling in courts in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Allahabad, Bengaluru, and Bhopal for 2 years.

As per official sources, the decision to transfer all cases related to OTT platforms was taken before it was brought under I&B Ministry’s purview.

Earlier, the top court had issued a notice to the Centre and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in a petition to regulate OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. by an autonomous body.

In the Sudarshan News case, the government had expressed its concern about the need to regulate digital media.
