Bombay High Court on May 19 summoned dean of Mumbai GT hospital in response to a plea filed by DU professor Hany Babu asking for medical aid for an eye infection he had developed after contracting COVID 19.

The professor had tested positive for COVID 19 previous week and as a result was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai. He is an under trial prisoner in the Bhima Koregaon Case

The advocate of professor Yug Chaudhary moved to a vacation bench consisting of Justices SP Tavade and SJ Kathawalla in order to appeal for an urgent hearing.

The plea stated that Babu had developed an eye infection due to mucormycosis (black fungus) which is prevalent among many COVID 19 patients.

“Hany Babu is suffering from eye infection due to the black fungus,” his counsel said, according to PTI. “For nine days he suffered in jail. At the moment, he is in the GT Hospital. He is being treated only for Covid-19 and not the eye infection. He may lose his eyesight. He is an academician.” The plea stated.

In response, the dean of Mumbai’s GT hospital was summoned during a virtual hearing at 3pm.

According to Babu’s family on May 3rd he had experienced pain and swelling in the left eye which had led to double vision and severe pain. Then on May 11th his vision had vanished in the left eye as a result of the swelling that had spread to his cheek, ear and forehead.

The family stated that upon appearance of earlier signs of the infection Babu had immediately requested a consultation and treatment but he was not taken to the doctor as the escorting officer was unavailable.

On May 13th according to Babu’s family, after his lawyer had made several calls and sent an email to the Taloja jail he was finally admitted to JJ hospital.

The family claimed that his hospital admission was notified to his wife but anything about his diagnosis or treatment was left out.
