The Gauhati High Court recently granted 45 days to the Assam Government to complete the construction of a detention centre and to shift detainees there afterward, in response to a petition concerning detention of foreign illegal migrants.

The Court was informed that there are currently 177 prisoners in various detention centres around the State, with the majority of them unable to furnish the requisite documentation for their release.

The Court stated, “The State envisaged that the construction of the detention centre at Matia, Goalpara, would be completed by September, 2021.”

Justice Kalyan Rai Surana directed the State’s Secretary of Home and Political Department to file the updated status report after 45 days from August 11.

The Government notified the Court that after the completion of construction, all inmates detained in various detention centres would be relocated to the new Matia camp.

The matter will be next heard on September 30.
