On the occasion of Independence Day, the Assam State Legal Service Authority (ASLSA) is launching the “School on Wheels” initiative in Guwahati. The programme aims to give the city’s poorest kids a foundational education.

A common curriculum is designed to give children a high-quality elementary education that will be simple for them to understand because each enrolled child will range in age. They will complete a 10-month bridge programme, and when they are effectively prepared, they will be enrolled in two different schools in and near Hatigaon and Bhootnath so they can continue their education.

This programme will run in two school buses arranged by Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), and the school buses will be equipped with various amenities like LED TV and Wi-Fi,” said Nayan Shankar Baruah, Member Secretary of Assam State Legal Service Authority in a conversation with G Plus. Additionally, the kids will receive uniforms, shoes, books, and other necessities.

He added that this programme will be linked to the mid-day meal programme, and as a result, children enrolled in the “School on Wheels – Signal School” programme will receive lunch in addition to their instruction. 58 kids are now enrolled in the programme.

It should be noted that the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority first launched this project in March 2022. Following the Gujarat model, the Assam State Legal Service Authority will commence the project as a pilot project in the district of Kamrup (Metro), with the goal of assisting youngsters who are on the streets, at bus stops, markets, railway stations, and on footpaths. The project will be expanded statewide if it is effective in Guwahati.

Justice R.M. Chhaya, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Executive Chairman of the Assam State Legal Service Authority, and Justice Suman Shyam, Chairperson of the Gauhati High Court Legal Service Committee, will oversee the program’s launch.

Several organisations are involved in the programme as stakeholders, including the Assam State Legal Services Authority, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, the Guwahati Municipality Cooperation, the Assam Education Department, the Gauhati High Court Legal Services Committee, the Assam Text Book Corporation, the District Legal Services Authority Kamrup (M), the Assam State Transport Corporation, the Axom Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission, the Guwahati Traffic Police, and the Railway Protection.

On August 15, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, will launch the initiative.
