Filmmaker Aisha Sultana accused of sedition, anticipatory bail plea to be heard on 17 June

Aisha Sultana’s anticipatory bail plea, on the matter of an FIR filed against her for sedition against the island administration’s new regulations, is to be heard by Kerala High Court on 17 June.

Sultana is seeking an anticipatory bail after an FIR was filed against her under Section 124A and 153B of the Indian Penal Code in Kavaratti Police Station. The Court adjourned the hearing for 17 June and sought the response of the authorities on the same.

The Complaint was filed by a BJP worker who alleged her for making wrong remarks in a news channel discussion where she alleged the Government of India for using “Bio-weapon” against the island inhabitants.

In explanation to her remark, Sultana has stated in her bail plea that her remark was all related with criticizing Government for relaxing the Covid-19 protocols, which thereafter resulted in the exponential rise in the cases in the island of Lakshadweep.

Sultana further referred the case of Kedarnath and Vinod Dua and had pleaded to be innocent thereby stating that mere criticism of the Government cannot be termed as sedition.

In the statement, Sultana has further stated that none of her statements sparked the violence in the state and hence she cannot be held liable for sedition on mere ground of disagreement with the policies of the government.

In conclusion, Sulatna further mentioned that after her remarks turned into the controversy, she has already issued an explanation to her remarks and made her intention to very clear to the general public.

The matter is listed for hearing on 17 June.
