On Wednesday the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) announced that its agents seized over 300 kg of narcotics worth approximately Rs 2,000 crore from a container ship upon its arrival at the VOC Port in Tuticorin.

According to intelligence officials, the ship, which had originated in Panama, had transited via the ports of Antwerp and Colombo before docking in Tuticorin, about 600 km from Chennai.

A senior official said, “DRI personnel inspected the container, which had declared wooden logs as its cargo, and seized 302 white-coloured compressed bricks wrapped in packing material, concealed in nine bags packed between the logs,” adding that the contraband weighed 303 kg and was “suspected to be cocaine.”

According to a DRI official, this was one of the agency’s biggest seizures, and the overall estimated value of the contraband in the international market was about Rs 2,000 crore.

He said, “the contraband was seized in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985, and an investigation was underway.”
