Dominica High Court grants bail to Mehul Choksi, told to return when Medically Fit

The Dominica High Court has granted bail to fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi and asked him to return for trial only when his doctor will certify him for being medically fit.

Mehul Choksi, who is under arrest in Dominica for illegal entry into the country has been allowed to travel to Antigua and Barbuda for his treatment of adverse neurological conditions.

The bail granted to Choksi is a setback for the Indian agencies who were making efforts to bring him back in India for trial of his Rs. 13000 crores PNB fraud case as per Indian legal system.

Choksi’s Legal team informed the Court about his adverse condition of a clot in brain along with other health issues such as diabetes and Hypertension.

The Court, considering the medical report of Choksi, granted him bail. 

The CT scan report dated June 29 signed by doctors Yerandy Galle Gutierrez and Rene Gilbert Veranes of Princess Margaret Hospital of Dominica stated that, “The services are not currently available on the island. All courtesies extended to him would be greatly appreciated.”

The hearing of the case which was decided to be heard on July 23 was held on July 12 on the medical grounds.

The Dominica High Court has ordered Choksi to inform the Court about his address or change of specialist in any case during the time of his stay in Antigua.

The matter is put on hold for adjudication till January 26, 2022.
