A Senior Dental Surgeon recently moved to the Supreme Court of India opposing the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM)’s decision of allowing AYUSH doctors to perform dental procedures.

The Dentist, who is an executive committee member of Indian Dental Council (IDC), President of Jharkhand State Dental Council (JSDC) and Jharkhand Dental Association (JDA) has filed a petition mentioning that the decision of CCIM would be devastating.

The CCIM amended Indian Medicine Central Council (Post Graduate Ayurveda Education) Regulations, 2016, to include the regulation that allows the PG students of Ayurveda for practicing the general surgery including orthopedic, ophthalmology, ENT, and dental.

It has been pointed out by the dental surgeon that performing dental procedures require a five year long medical study and training.

The Senior Dental Surgeon further stated that “It’s a move to protect the rights of the dental surgeon. The Indian Dental Association (IDA) is committed to fight for saving the interest of dental surgeons of the country”.

The protest has also been made by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against the decision and had said that “It would resist any form of mixing of different forms of medicine”.

As a response for the statement of IMA, the AYUSH Ministry clarified that there would not be any mixing of Modern Medical Practices with the Ancient Ayurvedic System.

The postgraduate Ayurveda students would be restricted only to 58 types of surgical procedures as notified by the Central Council of Indian Medicine(CCIM).
