The Delhi High Court recently issued a Notice pertaining to a Petition that pressurizes on the need to put a total ban on Slaughter of old cows, buffaloes, bullocks and bulls, irrespective of gender of the animal. The High Court has sought a response from the Central Government in regards with the Plea.

The Delhi High Division Bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh were hearing a Plea filed by one Brishban Verma who is being represented by his Counsel, Advocate Prashant Shukla.

The Counsel for the Petitioner stated that “The Prohibition on Slaughter of cows must be extended to bulls and bullocks as these animals continue to provide dung and urine that can be used by farmers as manure and fertilizer even if they cannot assist in agricultural work and breeding after a certain age.”

Advocate Prashant Shukla pointed out that “Like when there is Prohibition on lion then lioness is also Prohibited. There is Prohibition on peacock, then peahen will also be Prohibited. But the Order is clearly about Slaughter of old-useless bulls, bullocks and old buffaloes.”

In the Petition it was mentioned that Article 48 of the Constitution of India has not been correctly interpreted regarding the ban on Slaughter of cows, bulls etc. The Petitioner urged on the fact that if the ban on Slaughter of male counterparts of the female animals, is not put, then it could severely affect the economic and agricultural growth of India.

The Counsel for the Petitioner also stated that “… almost 97% of cow breeds are either Slaughtered or vanished. Now if we considerably look only 3% of cow breeds are alive presently and if no concreate steps are taken then there will not remain a single species of cow.”

The Delhi High Court in light of all the matters, has Ordered the Ministry of Home Affairs to give a response pertaining to the above-mentioned matter. The date for further hearing of the case of Brishbhan Verma v. Union of India & Anr, was moved to March 15, 2022.
