A Delhi court granted bail to Sharjeel Imam in connection with the alleged delivery of an incendiary speech at Jamia Milia Islamia in December 2019, which resulted in unrest outside the campus.

On January 25, 2020, the Delhi Police filed a FIR against him under several IPC Sections including 124A (sedition) and 153A (promote or attempt to promote disharmony or feelings of enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community, or any other ground whatsoever).

On January 28, 2020, Sharjeel Imam was taken into custody in Jehanabad, Bihar.

Delhi Police accused Sharjeel Imam of sedition in April 2020, claiming that his speech incited animosity between individuals, which sparked disturbances near Jamia Millia Islamia University.

In their inquiry, the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police discovered that Sharjeel Imam had delivered vehement lectures at Aligarh and Jamia Universities. An investigation is being conducted to determine his involvement in the Delhi riots case.

In his bail request to a Delhi court in October 2021, Sharjeel Imam claimed that he was not a terrorist and that the prosecution against him was the “whip of a monarch rather than a government founded by law.”
