Delhi Court grants Bail to man accused of overseeing extortion racket from jail

On June 17th, a Delhi Court granted bail to a man accused of running an extortion racket from Bhondsi jail. Advocate Ravi Drall represented the accused, Sonu in the case.

Sonu alias Akshay, was granted bail by Additional Sessions Judge, Smita Garg and was asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs 15000 and a surety of the same amount.

“Investigation qua him is complete. The charge sheet against him has already been filed. No purpose would be served by further detention of the applicant (Sonu alias Akshay)”, the Court said.

According to the FIR registered by the Delhi Police on 23 June 2020, the complainant, Sanjay was at his house in the village when a man between the age of 25-30 years came to his house and handed him a slip.

The man asked him to keep the money ready and when Sanjay saw the former taking something out from his pocket he got scared and shut the door. Following which he heard 4-5 rounds of gun shots being fired.

Later when the complainant opened the door he found 4-5 empty cartridges on the ground and saw the man fleeing on a motor bike with his accomplice.

An unknown call then was received on Sajnay’s brother, Praveen’s mobile phone and a demand of Rs 1 crore was made.

The prosecution stated that in the slip names of applicant, Sanjeev alias Bhanja and Bhai Sethi were written.

On June 25, 2020 the applicant was interrogated and revealed that the incident in question was committed by co-accused Ankit and Ravi upon his directions and he had made that call to complainant’s brother’s phone.

Investigation Officer stated that the call was a voice call on whats app and as of yet no response from whatsapp with respect to the subscriber of the said no. has been received till now.
