Deadline to incorporate new ethics code over, Twitter, Facebook yet to comply

The deadline for the social media platforms to comply with the new government regulations ended on 25th May, 2021 Midnight, However companies like Twitter, Facebook didn’t face any immediate blackout, despite of them being unable to comply by the new ethics code.

On 26th May, Facebook reflected that it is working to implement operational processes and aimed to abide by the provisions of the IT rules that will be in immediate effect from May 26th itself.

The social media platforms have sought an extension of the deadline. Though Indian Social Media company koo had complied with new rules.

Under the government’s take to have “additional due diligence” the social media platforms with over 50 lakh users like Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube etc were required to abide by the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 notified on February 25th.

As per the guidelines, the social media platforms are required to appoint three types of officers-

1 Chief Compliance Officer: Will ensure new rules are followed

2 Nodal Officer: Will be in touch with law enforcing agencies 24×7 to remove or block any illegal or inflammatory content

3 Resident Grievance Officer: Will acknowledge grievances within 24 hours and respond to complainant in 15 days

Companies need to identify the first originator of any contentious message. Three-official panel to be liable if any illegal content is shared over their platforms, which makes the company criminally liable for any such content shared unlike before.
