Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana on Saturday showed concern regarding the huge pendency of criminal cases in Allahabad High Court.

CJI also requested the Bar and Bench of Allahabad High Court to work together and resolve this issue.

The Chief Justice expressed his worries while speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the National Law University, Advocates Chamber Complex and multi-level parking. A portrait of legendary advocate late Anand Bhushan Saran was also unveiled there.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Law Minister Kiran Rijju and several Supreme Court and High Court Judges were also present there.

The Chief Justice also stated that “This Bar has left an indelible mark in India’s freedom struggle and the drafting of our Constitution. I expect you to carry forward the extraordinary legacy, tradition and culture of this historic bar. I urge you all, to take a lead in protecting the rights, liberties and freedoms of the citizens”.

The UP Authorities filed an affidavit before the Apex Court which stated that the Allahabad High Court has approximately 1.83 lakhs pending criminal cases and 68 judicial vacancies out of the sanctioned limit of 160.

President Kovind added that the judicial course of the country can be strengthened only with the association of sufficient services for the subordinate judiciary, increasing the number of working judges and providing sufficient sources as per the provisions of the price range.

Justice Ramana then stated that “That is the reason why I am championing the National Judicial Infrastructure Corporation, which will develop concepts of the National Court Development Project and its implementation”.

Justice Ramana added that the NJIC shall be along the lines of different infrastructure development statutory bodies that work towards creating national assets across the country. One of the design principles that the NJIC will follow, is socially responsible and inclusive architecture.
