Citing Court Judgements Assam Police serves Legal Notice to AASU to call bandh

Assam police served Legal Notice to All Assam Students Union (AASU) leadership for Allegedly calling bandh in Dibrugarh district, mentioning Court orders announcing bandh Illegal.

Shwetank Mishra, superintendent of police in Dibrugarh, provided a Legal Notice on AASU general secretary Shankar Jyoti Baruah for calling a 24-hour Dibrugarh bandh. The student body called a bandh to rebel the Arrest of their members following a fight with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Following the bandh on Sunday, normal life was disrupted.

“Whereas, data has been obtained that you have called for a 24-hour Dibrugarh district bandh with effect from 5 a.m. on December 26 under the banner of All Assam Students Union, Dibrugarh and widely spread the hardcopy of the bandh called in public places (copy of the poster & press release enclosed”),” the notice stated.

“And, while Christmas and New Year’s Eve are currently being celebrated in the district, and various enrolment and academic exams are taking place, there is every probability of a disruption to the public at large, as well as a clear violation of security Law and Order, you are hereby instructed to withdraw the bandh call and cooperate in keeping peace,” the SP said in the notice.

The Notice stated that “bandh has been asserted Unconstitutional and Illegal” by numerous Verdicts of the Supreme Court of India, Kerala High Court, and Gauhati High Court . The Notice also warned that if the aforementioned Illegal and Unconstitutional bandh call is not immediately revoked, strict actions will be taken.

Following a college election, there was a tussle on December 24.

“We condemn the police attack,” AASU Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya tweeted. “Those who have been Arrested have to be release. Such attacks will not be tolerated.”
