Central Govt. Appoints Justices PB Varale, Pankaj Mithal & Ali Mohd. Magrey as Chief Justice of Karnataka HC, Rajasthan HC & J&K&L HC Respectively

The Central government has notified the appointment of Justice PB Varale, Justice Ali Mohd Magrey and Justice Pankaj Mithal as the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, and Rajasthan High Court, respectively.

Elevation of Justice PB Varale

Justice PB Varale of the Bombay High Court has been elevated by the Central government to serve as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium, presided by Chief Justice of India UU Lalit, recommended his elevation last month.

In August 1985, Justice Varale enrolled as an attorney and worked under Attorney SN Loya for his first few years of practise.

He is currently the senior-most judge at the Bombay High Court. Up till 1992, he also worked as a lecturer at the Ambedkar Law College in Aurangabad.

On July 18, 2008, he was chosen to serve as a Judge of the Bombay High Court.

As Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Justice Varale will be the fourth judge from the Bombay High Court.

The other three were present Supreme Court Justice AS Oka (May 2019-August 2021) and retired judges Justices ML Pendse (July 1995-March 1996) and SP Bharucha (January 1991-June 1992).

Transfer of Justice Pankaj Mithal

Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal, has been transferred by the Central government from the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh to the Rajasthan High Court.

On September 28, the Supreme Court Collegium, presided over by Chief Justice of India UU Lalit, recommended his transfer.

In 1961, Justice Mithal was born. He earned a degree in 1982 from Allahabad University and an L.L.B. in 1985 from Meerut College.

He began practising law in the Allahabad High Court in 1985 and continued there until he was appointed to the position of additional judge in 2006.

He was sworn in as a permanent judge in 2008, and in December 2020, he was named Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

Elevation of Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey

Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey was elevated as Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on Tuesday by the Central government.

At a meeting of the Collegium on September 28 that was presided over by Justice of India UU Lalit, the Supreme Court collegium had recommended his elevation.

After the transfer of the incumbent Chief Justice, Pankaj Mithal, to the Rajasthan High Court, the decision was made.

On December 8, 1960, Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey was born.

In 1984, he registered as an advocate and began practising law at district courts, including revenue courts and tribunals, as well as in the High Court.

In March 2013, he was chosen to serve as a judge on the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
