CBSE tells Supreme Court evaluation criteria for Class XII CBSE Board

The CBSE informed the Supreme Court that it will evaluate Class XII students for theory based on 30% from Class X, 30% from Class XI, and 40% from Class XII, as well as marks for practical /internal assessment on an actual basis as uploaded by the schools on the CBSE Portal.

The submissions were made before a Bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice Dinesh Maheshwari. The Attorney General described the CBSE’s policy for evaluating students during the session.

AG remarked, “CBSE has been in existence since 1929, and this is the first time it has ever happened. They worked with an expert group to create this. CBSE has chosen three classes for this purpose: 10, 11, and 12.”

AG explained that Class X is a Board exam with distinct subjects than Class XI and XII.

Each of the exams in Class XI, including the unit, term, and final exams, has been completed. The grades are comparable and are averaged. He went on to say that there will be practical exams as well, and that these would be 100%. While weightage for Class 10th and 11th is 30 questions each, weightage for Class XII is 40%.

AG clarified, “Then there’s class 11, which has a 70% pass rate. The same thing will happen if the maximum number of people is 24. It will be 80 for ten. In class 12, 40% of the students will be tested. The maximum number of students in Class 12 will be 32. The 12th grade exam is crucial. The Practical is worth 100 points, and if you add 32 and 24 together, you’ll get 56 points.”

After his explanation of the mark distribution, the AG said that the Result Committee, which would also serve as the moderation committee, will be made up of two of the most senior instructors, with one expert being summoned if necessary.

The AG further informed the Court that the school’s internal performance would be averaged to guarantee standardization, and that the previous performance of Schools would be used as a guide.

AG stated, “The school’s subject-wise results for 2020-2021 should be within a range of plus/minus 5 marks acquired by students at the school in the reference year in the subject.”

Students who do not satisfy the qualifying criteria will be placed in the ‘Essential Repeat’ or Compartment Category, according to AG.

While noting that those students who are dissatisfied may reappear, AG noted that the Board will conduct the examinations as and when the conditions are conducive.
