Calcutta High Court Seeks Status Reports from West Bengal Government on Rape Cases

The West Bengal Government was Ordered by the Calcutta High Court to furnish progress Reports and Case diaries in five recent Cases of Rape, Gang Rape, and attempted Rape in various Districts of the State. The Government was also Ordered to provide security to the complainants and their families, according to the Court.

In a Public Interest Litigation, Petitioners stated that on April 15, a Tribal girl was gang-raped in Shantiniketan, Birbhum district, and a woman was raped in Namkhana, South 24 Parganas District, and that they wanted an independent agency or a Court-Monitored inquiry.

A physically challenged lady was reportedly raped in Pingla, Paschim Medinipur district, while another woman was allegedly raped in Netra, South 24 Parganas, according to the Public Interest Litigation.

Another attempted rape event was reported in Maynaguri, Jalpaiguri district, in which the Victim attempted suicide after being threatened by the attacker.

He also stated that the Prosecution has filed a Petition with the Competent Court in Jalpaiguri, seeking termination of the Accused’s Bail in the Maynaguri incident, which occurred in late February.

The complainants have been given Police protection, according to the Lawyer.
